Avani Avittam - 1

Almost every time I made post on the occasion of Varalakshmi Vratam, I have been tempted to do something for Avani Avittam. This year, I finally decided to start.

While it was Avani Avittam today (Aug 15th) in India, it was yesterday here in the US, and today is Gayatri Japam.  For the first time this year, I decided to use a book that Perippa gifted to do the ब्रह्मयज्ञं and even the general उपाकर्म (particularly the महासंकल्पम् )

I don't remember the occasion when he gave me this book, but I suspect that it was during an Avani Avittam that we performed in the flat (Seapoint Apts) sometime around 2008 or so, with Veda Sir presiding and Appa in attendance.

The book contains a copy of the Giri Trading style upakarma booklet (it says வைதிக ஸமாஜம் , 41, மாங்காடு சாமி தெரு , நுங்கம்பாக்கம் , சென்னை - 600034 on the back)  from 1986 that lists 15-8-86 as Varalakshmi Vratam, and 19-8-86 and 20-8-86 as Avani Avittam/Gayatri Japam respectively.

Luckily, the book also clears up confusion on who should/shouldn't do all of the देव-ऋषि-पितृ तर्पणं .. Generally there are three opinions:
a) anyone whose father is alive should only do the देव-ऋषि तर्पणंand leave out the पितृ तर्पणं (watch from 15:45 on this video)

b) शास्त्रं "allows" for all to do the  देव-ऋषि तर्पणं, but in நடைமுறை it is not so, and so it can be left out (watch from slightly after 6:15 in the video below)

c) everyone must do the full देव-ऋषि-पितृ तर्पणं

The book contains the following note (வியாக்கியானக் குறிப்பு)

பிதா ஜீவித்திருக்கும் போதும் இந்தத் தர்ப்பணம் பித்ருமானாகிய ஸோமன் , அங்கிரஸவானாகிய யமன் , மற்றும் கவ்யவாஹனாகிய அக்னி முதலிய திவ்ய பித்ருக்களை உத்தேசித்து செய்யப்பட வேண்டும்

Varalakshmi Vratam - 5

I'm happy that this blog that has been dormant for so long is being updated again on the occasion of Varalakshmi Vratam (yet again !)

The last time we were in India (or maybe the time before that), I managed to bring back a number of books from Perippa/Manimma's religious collection. There were really precious books in that list. One "set" (in a plastic cover with a long sharaDu)

included 5 books on (Devi) Puja Vidhanam, the details of which are posted below:

Book1:

பூஜா விதானம்
ஸ்ரீ காமாக்ஷி , ஸ்ரீ வரலக்ஷ்மி , ஸ்ரீ சரஸ்வதி பூஜைகள் 

This book has several beautiful pictures incl.

a) Kamakshi (front cover) 

b) (Jnana)Sarasvati (back cover)  

c) Varalakshmi (inside back cover), and  

d) Mahaperiyava (inside front cover)  

Booklet 2:

வரலக்ஷ்மீ வ்ரதம்  

This book is published by the Ramakrishna Matham, which has done yeoman service to followers of sanatana dharma everywhere. What I found interesting is Swami Vivekananda's notes on crossing the ocean and seeing other lands:

கடல் கடந்து மேனாடுகளுக்கு வந்து பல நாட்டவர்களையும் பார்க்கும்போதுதான் ஒருவனுக்குக் கண்கள் திறக்கின்றன. வெறும் பேச்சால் அல்ல; உண்மையிலேயே நம்மிடம் என்ன உள்ளது, என்ன இல்லை, என்பது நேரடியாகக் கண் முன்னர் காட்டுவதாலேயே உறுதிவாய்ந்த செயல் வீரர்களை நான் உருவாக்கப் போகிறேன். குறைந்தது பத்து லட்சம் இந்துக்களாவது உலகம் முழுவதையும் சுற்றிப்பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று நான் விரும்புகிறேன்

Book 3:

வரலக்ஷ்மி விரதம்
காமாக்ஷி சுப்ரபாதம்

This book is authored by Sri Subrahmanya Dikshitar, was published in 1995, and only has pictures of Kamakshi, Periyava and Adi Shankaracharya.

One of these days I will try to post the author's translation/notes (கருத்துரை) for the Kamakshi Suprabhatam.

Book 4:

ஸௌபாக்கயலக்ஷ்மீ பூஜை 

This book and the next one are published by one E. Parvati Ammal of Mandavelipaakkam. In the preface (முகவுரை ), she writes:

... சாதாரணப் பெண்மணிகளும் இப்பூஜையில் ஈடுபடுவதால் அவர்களுக்கும் லக்ஷ்மி கடாக்ஷம் உண்டாகி இன்புற்று இருப்பார்கள் என்பது நிச்சயம். அதனால் சகல பெண்மணிகளுக்கும் லக்ஷ்மி கடாக்ஷம் சித்தி பெற இந்த சௌபாக்யலக்ஷ்மி பூஜை மிகவும் அவசியம் எனக் கருதியே இப்புத்தகம் எழுதலானேன் .....

இந்த பூஜை செய்வதால் நிச்சயம் சர்வ மங்கள மாங்கல்யம் ஏற்படும்

The book concludes with the shrI stuti (which seems to be a variation of the version here) and the kalyANa-vRiShTi-stavaH

The last book in this set, also by E. பார்வதி அம்மாள் , contains a kriti on Lakshmi (no ragam and talam are mentioned) with the pallavi

ஸ்ரீ ராஜபுத்ரி வரலக்ஷ்மி ராவே மா இன்டிகி  

I  was able to use the book today to do the puja. This book contained the sankalpam for that year handwritten by Manimma. One photo from our puja is posted below.
